Deadline March 5, Midnight

Cameras are terrific tools for telling stories about the world. But they can also capture abstract designs based on pattern, texture, light, or color. For this exhibition, PhotoPlace Gallery seeks photographs that explore abstraction in the visual world.

For ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONS, juror Carl Chiarenza will select forty photos for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery from May 15 through June 9, 2012. He will also choose an additional thirty-five photos for the gallery’s “On-Line Annex.” All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalog available for purchase. To help artists defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes. Submission fee: $25 for five photos, $6 each additional photo.

PhotoPlace Gallery is honored to welcome esteemed photographer Carl Chiarenza as juror for ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONS. Carl is Artist-in-Residence, and Fanny Knapp Allen Professor Emeritus of Art History, at the University of Rochester. Chiarenza has lectured and taught workshops at over 100 institutions in 33 states since 1966. His photographs have been seen in over 80 one-person, and in over 250 group exhibitions since 1957. Monographs of his work include: Chiarenza: Landscapes Of The Mind (David R. Godine, Boston, 1988), Chiarenza: Evocations (Nazraeli Press, Tucson, 2002) ; Peace Warriors of 2003 (Nazraeli Press, Tucson, 2005); Solitudes (Lodima Press, Ottsville, PA, 2005); Interaction: Verbal/Visual (Nazraeli Press, 2006); Chiarenza: Pictures Come From Pictures (D.R.
