Call for Entries: All Human Beings Are Free and Equal, Berlin

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION 2011: ALL HUMAN BEINGS ARE FREE AND EQUAL.

Call for applications

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 10 December 1948 as a response to the crimes committed by the National Socialist regime. In Article 1 of the declaration, the 48 signatory states agreed on the fundamental principle that “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”, irrespective of their race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
Some minorities that were persecuted under the National Socialist regime still suffer discrimination today. This cannot be reconciled with the self-image of a society that places particular value on the protection of human rights. The Foundation EVZ draws attention to such discrimination and works to secure equality for all minorities by raising awareness in mainstream society and supporting committed NGOs.
Theme

“All human beings are free and equal” is the theme of this year’s competition. We invite you to capture your commitment to this theme through your photographic images.

The theme can be interpreted in various ways. Do human rights really apply for all human beings? Is there general agreement on the validity of human rights? Where and to what extent are human rights not observed in Europe today? How can we make the commitment to minorities more visible?

Who can take part?
For the first time, the competition this year is open to anyone interested in the theme. As in the past, all partners and projects, jury members, experts, scholarship recipients and participants in programmes supported by the Foundation are of course invited to join in.
Prizes

A jury will award prizes of EUR 250 to each of the ten best entries, which will be published in a photo gallery (www.stiftung-evz.de) and on the Foundation’s Facebook page. The photos will also be evaluated by the Facebook community, and the picture with the most votes will win a further EUR 250.

Submissions
Participants can submit up to three digital photographs, either black and white or colour. Please send your photos and the entry form, including all necessary information on the photographer and the picture caption (motif, location, date etc.), by email to fotowettbewerb@stiftung-evz.de.

You can download the entry form at http://www.stiftung-evz.de/projekte/fotowettbewerb/.
