The Iowa Review is pleased to announce the newest category of its Iowa Review Awards: photography. The 2013 Iowa Review Award in Photography will be judged by Alec Soth, photographer, and Kathleen Edwards, Chief Curator, University of Iowa Museum of Art. The winner will receive $1,500 and be featured in an image essay in the December 2013 issue of The Iowa Review. The runner-up will receive $750.
Rules
Submit up to ten digital images at iowareview.submittable.com. Work must be previously unpublished. Simultaneous submissions are fine assuming you immediately inform us of acceptance elsewhere.
The specs for submitted work are as follows: JPG format only, 72 DPI, sRGB color space profile, a maximum of 2,000 pixels in width or height. The winner will be asked to provide high-resolution images at a later date.
Please do not include your name in the filename of your JPGs so that the contest can remain blind. Include personal information in your cover letter only.
The submission fee is $20. Add an additional $10 for a yearlong subscription to the magazine (optional).
Submissions must be received in Submittable between January 1 and January 31, 2013.
Eligibility and Conflicts of Interest
Current students, faculty, or staff of the University of Iowa are not eligible to enter the contest.
Work is ineligible to win if it is slated for publication before December 2013 or if it has been named winner or runner-up in any other contest. Please withdraw work from our contest immediately if these conditions apply.
Judges are instructed not to award the prize to entrants with whom they have had a personal or professional relationship. Despite viewing the images with artist names removed, judges may sometimes be able to guess the identity of the entrant. Even if they can’t tell during the judging process, they have the right to change their decision if it turns out that the entrant is someone with whom there is any appearance of conflict of interest. Therefore, we advise entrants not to enter the contest if the judge is someone they know personally or have worked with professionally.
