Looking out the hotel pinhole...

Joel Heffner

Abelardo Morell likes to check into hotels. He likes to admire the scene from the hotel window. He admires them so much that he takes a picture…sort of. He blackens the room leaving only a small circle for the light to come in. A pinhole image appears on the other side of the room and Morell sets up a view camera to capture the image…on the wall. If you’d like to see an example look at his site at www.abelardomorell.net. Wouldn’t an article about this unusual “pinhole” photographer be good for Without Lenses? I’d be happy to write it.

I have Abelardo Morell on my list of people to learn about and do a story on so I think this would be a great idea to pursue. What do you see in terms of format – a straight article about his work and process, an interview or conversation? To show images of the work we do need to contact the artist and get permission to run photos.

I think that Mr. Morell would be happy to share some of his images and answer some questions. In the past, I have asked for permission to use some of his images in workshops that I have given on pinhole photography and he was very agreeable.

I like it, and I like the work of Abelardo Morell. The article in Photoicon issue 4 was way too short!
In reaction I would like to add an idea for the more humble pinhole photographers among us: take your camera to the window and make a picture of what can be seen (I have also placed a thread with this on the famous f/295 forum)
