CALL FOR SUBMISSION: “FOTO: Pushing Boundariesâ€
http://www.arc-sf.com/submissions.html
Deadline: December 31, 2010
Exhibition: March 5 – 27, 2011
Photography is both an art and a science. Photography allows artists to express their emotions and communicate complex concepts, but to do so artists often need to master the scientific part of the medium. Unlike a painter, who is in direct contact with his medium, a photographer is separated from his subject by the camera and from his “canvas” by darkroom equipment, computers, and printers. And through these, the artist may push the limits and create cutting-edge new works in many imaginative ways.
“FOTO: Pushing Boundaries†is a survey of photographic media today in the United States exploring photography that pushes the boundaries of the medium through unusual and challenging imagery, and employs creative use of either traditional darkroom processes or non-traditional processes. The juror’s criteria for “FOTO: Pushing Boundaries†includes originality, innovation, and impact, as well as composition and mastery of technique in each piece of work submitted.
CATEGORIES ACCEPTED:
Original artworks created through photography in 2009 & 2010 – including photographs shot with film cameras or digital cameras, scanned images, unaltered photographs, altered photographs, montages, cyanotype, photograms, and polaroid transfers. This can include straightforward subject matter, factual subjects presented in an unusual way, recognizable objects in unrealistic surroundings, or strictly abstract images.
JUROR: Ada TakahashiAda Takahashi, Director and Partner of Robert Koch Gallery, San Francisco, has been with the gallery since 1986, sharing duties with co-owner Robert Koch. Once a photographer herself, Takahashi now focuses on curating shows and managing the gallery. She began her professional career as a researcher at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, but quickly moved into gallery work where she found more opportunities for interaction with people – discovering new artists and sharing their work with others.
