Juror’s Statement:
Mary Ellen MarkI believe that photography is the most powerful universal language on the planet. Photography has no political borders,no cultural barriers, no limits to expression. It just requires vision, clarity, imagination and courage. I appreciate all genres of photography, all subject matter, and all points of view. I am hopingto discover people who are using the visual language of photography in powerful, elegant, memorable ways. And in this age of a superabundance of pictures and images, I look for photographs that are fresh and avoid a sense of déjà vu — images that shock, delight, surprise, and make me think.

I have the utmost respect for people who are able to use the powerful visual language of photography to share their own vision, ideas, points of view, understanding, concerns, hopes, fears and dreams.
