Entries must be by photographers based in the Midwestern United States or highlight the people, places, and culture of the Midwest. All photographic imagery is eligible for submission. This includes traditional film, alternative process, digital, and all post-production techniques. For purposes of this exhibition, the Midwest is defined as: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Submission deadline: June 30, 2014

Delivery of accepted images: Exhibit-ready prints must be received at PhotoMidwest between Sept. 1 and Sept. 10 if being shipped. Photographs may be delivered in person on Sept. 12 between the hours of Noon and 6 PM to 303 S. Paterson St., Madison.
Exhibit dates: Sept. 16- Nov. 30, 2014 at the Overture Center for the Arts, Galleries 1 and 2m Madison, WI.

JUROR | Wally Mason
Wally Mason is the director of the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Haggerty is an academic art museum that hosts 9-12 exhibitions annually. Recent and upcoming photography exhibitions include Stephen Shore: The Biographical Landscape; Persian Visions: Contemporary Photography from Iran, and Stella Johnson: El Sol. He has curated over 90 exhibitions, most recently: Tina Barney: The Europeans, The Truth is Not in the Mirror: Photography and a Constructed Identity, Philip Guston: Inevitable Finality, The Gemini G.E.L. Prints, Berenice Abbott: Cities Portraits; Prospect of Light: Plastic and Pinhole Images, Jocelyn Lee: Youth, Millions Taken Daily: Photographs from Everyone and Everywhere, Drawing as Thinking; John Marin’s Maine, Richard Estes: Recent Prints; Witty, Sexy, Gimmicky: British Pop Art; Being Where: Looking Into Landscape, Whatever is There is a Truth: Robert Rauschenberg’s Prints; and The Potential Self: Portrait as Signifier.

Mason holds a BA from Beloit College and an MFA from Indiana University.

SPONSOR | PhotoMidwest (formerly the Center for Photography at Madison) is sponsoring Of Midwest, By Midwest as part of the 2014 PhotoMidwest Festival. PhotoMidwest was created in 1998 to promote the photographic arts in Wisconsin. This year, along with its new name, PhotoMidwest is expanding its reach throughout the region with an emphasis on a regional aesthetic. PhotoMidwest offers monthly interest group meetings and photo critiques, exhibitions, and regional and national guest speakers. PhotoMidwest also has an extensive offering of classes in photography and the photographic arts. We are preparing a Midwest Speakers Bureau and a list of experienced class and workshop presenters as a resource for other photography organizations in the region.

The 2014 PhotoMidwest Festival is our 8th biennial PhotoMidwest event. This year, we are offering an intensive three-day kickoff to the festival following the opening reception of For Midwest, By Midwest. We are featuring lectures by noted regional and national speakers, workshops, guided photo shoots, classes, and other special events. Photographs selected for this exhibition will be featured at the Overture Center for the Arts, one of southern Wisconsin premier gallery spaces. Photographers are invited to join juror Wally Mason and members of the PhotoMidwest Board for a reception and gallery walk on Thursday, September 25. The gallery walk will provide an opportunity to learn more from Mason about his jurying process and to meet other skilled photographers working in the Midwest. Each selected image will also be featured in PhotoMidwest’s online Lumen Gallery. In order to be included in the online gallery or to receive an award, you must provide a professionally printed and framed/mounted image for gallery exhibition. All chosen artists will be included in the exhibition catalog.

Juror’s Selection: At the reception for Of Midwest, By Midwest, juror Wally Mason will select the three top images. Cash awards will be $500 for Best in Show, $250 for First Runner Up, and $100 for Second Runner Up.

Honorable Mention Awards: PhotoMidwest membership, including the PhotoMidwest weekly newsletter (one of the best around!), access to PhotoMidwest interest groups and member shows, and discounted admission to ticketed PhotoMidwest Festival events.

Exhibit Prints: All images accepted for exhibition must be printed and framed or mounted in a professional manner. Exhibit-ready prints must be received at PhotoMidwest no later than Wednesday, September 10, 2014.

Acceptance Notice: Everyone who submits will receive an email notification of which images were accepted. Accepted images will be posted on the Center’s website along with instructions for the gallery presentation.

Entry fees: $45 for the first three images. PhotoMidwest members can receive a $10 discount. Applicants signing up for membership at the time they submit will receive the coupon code from PhotoMidwest for use at checkout on the CAFÉ website.

Additional Images: Up to two additional images may be submitted for $15 each.
