Alt-processes and pinhole specialist Erin Malone presents two new series: In Paths Untrodden and From the Edge of Here.
In Paths Untrodden is color photography which blurs the edges of the way photography represents landscape. These photographs seek to capture the quiet and ever changing light moving across marshes, through the forest, and other favorite places. Malone says, “I challenge the viewer to rethink what a photograph looks like. I consider myself a painter with light and shape and motion. I use the simple zone plate and pinhole (no glass lens) with 4×5 Polaroid media to emphasize the other-worldly experience. These methods reveal what cannot normally be seen. In my mind, that essence captures the spirit of the landscape that I imagine is there just under the surface.â€
From the Edge of Here is Malone’s first photogravure project. In it she explores fleeting moments experienced at the edge of the continent, at cliffside, when the wind roars, the fog rolls in, and there is no more road to explore. Distinct edges are softened, the sounds heightened. There is a longing here for what lies beyond the horizon, and a reality to embrace when the fog descends.
