Workshop: Daguerreotypes, Rochester NY


From April 23, 2013 through April 26, 2013 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at George Eastman House

Conducted by Mike Robinson, acknowledged as a modern master of the medium, this workshop covers the perfected techniques used by commercial daguerreotypists in the 1850s. Participants will learn both modern and traditional techniques of polishing and will produce two mercury-developed, gilded daguerreotypes. Also covered will be advanced concepts of contrast control, alternative fuming techniques, and housing options.

Process Historian Mark Osterman will present a lecture on the evolution of the daguerreotype and show rare examples of daguerreotypes and vintage housings from the archives of the George Eastman House. Original daguerreotype apparatus and literature will also be on display specifically for this workshop. Each participant will receive a facsimile reprint of original step-by-step instructions and other readings on the topic of daguerreotype.

Audience: Limited to six, this four-day workshop is for anyone interested in making the very finest modern daguerreotype imagery. No experience is necessary.

Tuition: $1,600/$1,500 members, plus $150 materials fee

Cancellation Policy: Withdrawal from the workshop two weeks before the session start date will receive a refund, minus a $50 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than two weeks before a workshop start date. If the workshop is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class will be fully refunded. The Eastman House is not responsible for airline ticket cancellation costs or fees. The Eastman House may take and use images, still or video, for educational and promotional purposes.

Lodging: Lodging is not included in the cost of the workshop. Participants must make their own arrangements.
