A world of creative possibilities exists within the alternative photographic processes and mixed media realm. One of the most unique processes is the encaustic technique—using hot beeswax and pigments to enhance images. Working with pigmented wax is an ancient method of adding color to an object or art piece, and painters have long been enticed by the addition of translucent wax to their work. Photographers can blend encaustic painting and the translucency of wax with digital images as key elements in the art piece.
We begin with learning the basics of working with encaustic wax and explore techniques such as using stencils, imbedding objects, transferring images from laser copies, and adding texture and color to encaustic pieces.
Jill cover’s how to prepare digital images with sufficient detail and local contrast to use with encaustic methods. We then explore adding images at different stages in the creation of an encaustic piece, at the beginning or during the process of adding wax layers. Various papers and textiles will be available for printing.
On the first day, participants work with sample boards and practice techniques and exercises. The second day incorporates digital imagery from each student and focuses on blending photography with the wax methods.
This workshop with modern master Jill Skupin Burkholder introduces photographers to the basics of working with encaustic materials, exploring mixed-media assets, and the techniques needed to integrate this seductive medium.
