Tintype Excursion on the Erie Canal

From June 3, 2013 through June 7, 2013 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at George Eastman House

For the first time since the golden age of collodion, we are offering a truly unique experience to relive the wet plate canal excursions of the 1870s. Guided by Mark Osterman, the group will navigate a canal boat along the Erie Canal through step locks and picturesque scenery. Along the way the group will choose where to tie up along the canal bank, set up a portable darkroom and shoot whole plate tintypes. Tuition includes two nights at a bed & breakfast along the route.

Day 1: Basic instruction in tintype making at George Eastman House.

Day 2: Shooting along the Erie Canal. Group stays in a bed & breakfast.

Day 3: Shooting along the Erie Canal. Group stays in a bed & breakfast.

Day 4: Shooting along the Erie Canal. Return to Rochester in the evening.

Day 5: Varnishing tintypes and viewing historic examples at George Eastman House.

Participants will also receive a copy of the new Scully & Osterman basic collodion manual, including formulas and sources of supply, as well as additional wet plate era readings pulled from the research library.

Audience: This excursion is limited to five. Basic experience with wet plate collodion is an advantage, though due to the small number of participants, beginners can be accommodated. Cameras and all other equipment will be supplied.
