Photo Alchemy
A Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Alternative Process Photography

Exhibition dates: April 1 – May 7, 2011
Location: 23 Sandy Gallery, Portland, Oregon
Deadline for Entries: February 22, 2011

THEME – This exhibition seeks to showcase the revival in alternative process photography. In recent years we have seen contemporary photographers take a another look at early printing processes—from cyanotypes to daguerreotypes, these deep, dreamy images bring a unique style and surface to a photograph that can’t be achieved digitally. As darkrooms disappear we are looking for work made by artists who are exploring alternative process photographic methods‚ either as a response to the digital age or simply as a creative tool.

MEDIA – This exhibit is open to artists working with alternative process photographic techniques and materials such as, but not limited to: photograms, tintypes, daguerreotypes, carbon dichromates, gum bichromates, emulsion on metals, cyanotypes, collodian prints, Polaroids and much more. First generation works please, no digital or ink jet prints and no straight silver work.

JUROR – Photo Alchemy will be juried by Laura Moya who is executive director of Photolucida, a non-profit that works with emerging photographers, organizing their biennial Reviews festival and project managing their publications. She has curated the exhibits Resurrection: A New Look at Old Processes at 23 Sandy Gallery, and Borderline/Safekeeping at the Lishui Photography Festival. Laura has lectured at the Pingyao Photography Festival in China, and written interview pieces for Griffin Museum of Photography and Finite Foto. She has performed portfolio reviews nationally and internationally, most recently at Atlanta Celebrates Photography and Lenswork/Fotofest in Paris.

AWARDS – Three photographers will be awarded “Juror’s Choice Awards” as selected by our juror Laura Moya, which will include an online exhibition portfolio of a 10-image body of work, a certificate and special catalog recognition. One photographer will be awarded the “Portfolio Prize” by Diffusion Magazine, which will feature the selected winner’s portfolio in a two-page spread in their next issue which comes out in April.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS – Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee must be paid in US funds.

ONLINE AND PRINT CATALOGS – 23 Sandy Gallery will publish full online and print catalogs illustrating this exhibition. In an effort to keep entry fees low we are offering artists the option to purchase the catalog during the entry process at our cost rather than increasing our usual entry fee to cover printing costs.
