Class: Alt Process Extravaganza at Rayko Photo Center

San Francisco, CA

Our first twelve-week long course blends historical printing techniques, crazy darkroom film & print alterations, with newfangled alternative digital printing process, all rolled up into a single class. Join four kooky RayKo staff members as they share the tricks and techniques of their experiments in processing and printing. Learn what they did, how they did it, and why. The first sections of class focus on analog processes through tearing, cutting, and altering negatives and prints in the darkroom. Gain experience with paper coating using the cyanotype process, experiment with solarization, and liquid light. Next is an introduction to film development with household items such as caffeine and asprin. Also learn that limiting sensitization to just paper is narrow-minded, and be taught proper techniques of coating paper for platinum prints. The course will then transition to digital, where you will output inkjet digital negatives, use your pre-coated papers to create luscious and ethereal platinum prints. We’ll hand over tried and true recipes, show why chemical process control is just as important as digital workflow. During the last weeks of class you will work with digital liquid emulsion and output digital images onto handmade paper, textured paper, and metallic substrates. Combine digital process and traditional materials by printing on metallic RA-4 paper using an inkjet printer, and create a digital emulsion skin to use in 3D artwork. Lab pass will be included in class. PRE-REQ: basic darkroom experience, Photoshop layers & curves, basic digital printing experience. BRING: Notebook, time for take home assignments, and space in your mind for a whole new printing arsenal!
