Workshop: Gelatin Bromide Emulsion Making, Rochester, NY

Gelatin Bromide Emulsion Making

From March 18, 2013 through March 21, 2013 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at George Eastman House

This workshop will teach you how to make your own photo emulsion, similar to the commercial products used by fine art photographers. Mark Osterman and guest teacher Ron Mowrey, former emulsion engineer at Eastman Kodak Company, will teach the basic concepts. You will then be guided step-by-step to coat glass plates, expose them in a camera, and process your own negatives. The technique is simple, the tools are easy to find and inexpensive, and the freedom of making your own gelatin emulsion is beyond description.

Each participant will receive a manual with complete instructions, formulas, and related readings from the George Eastman House collection. Also included is the opportunity to see amazing original silver gelatin prints by Ansel Adams, Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Paul Strand, Emmet Gowin, and many others in the Museum’s Photographic Print Archive.
